prevention education
Our school and community-based education programs are available for people of all ages on a wide variety of subjects. We primarily focus on awareness and prevention: understanding the laws, making healthy choices, and learning about resources. You will find our programs in the tabs below. While our programs cover specific topics, you can submit an inquiry below to request a topic not listed. We cannot guarantee our ability to cover a requested topic, but we will work with you on any request.
We understand that many of the topics we cover are heavy subject matter. We emphasize that taking care of yourself as we review this information is very important. That is why we always give warnings as we lead into difficult topics and ensure that there are check ins and self care tips throughout the presentation.
Our elementary school program topics include sexual harassment and bullying prevention in school. An emphasis is also placed on NO – GO – TELL: say NO loudly and clearly, GO away from the person if possible, and TELL a trusted adult. The differences between telling and tattling are explained as well.
For middle schoolers, in addition to the above topics, we may also cover topics like sex trafficking and Commercial Sexual Exploitation of Children (CSEC) in an age-appropriate manner.
We currently offer two types of programs for high schools, our Check It club program and our presentation program.
Check It is a club currently being offered at Arcata High School with planned future implementation at McKinleyville High School, Hoopa High School, and Del Norte High School. Check It focuses on collaborating with students to create a culture of consent on campus, bystander intervention strategies, and healthy relationships. If your school is interested in implementing Check It, please contact us below!
Our high school presentation program can be one or three days. We cover a wide variety of topics in both of these programs and can tailor our presentation to topics your school requests. Below is our typical breakdown of topics by day.
Day one topics include consent, healthy and unhealthy relationships, and statutory rape.
Day two topics include barriers to reporting, rape culture, and bystander intervention.
Day three topics include CSEC, or Commercial Sexual Exploitation of Children, and sex trafficking.
Our college and university education program encompasses a wide variety of topics. Each presentation is tailored to fit the needs of the audience and can be addressed to a large or small group of people. Topics for college and university programs include discussions of power and privilege, self care, the cycle of violence, sexual assault, sex trafficking, Title IX, and more.
Title IX is a federal law that protects students, staff, and faculty from gender-based harassment. This includes sexual harassment, sexualized violence, intimate partner violence/domestic violence, and stalking.
Community presentations can take on a variety of forms depending on the needs of the audience. Presentation topics include discussions about the prevention of relationship violence, rape, sexual harassment, and sex trafficking.
In addition to presentations, the North Coast Rape Crisis team can be available to table and/or provide information at community events.
Our training and development programs for professionals can take on a variety of forms depending on the needs of the audience. Past programs have included self care strategies for service providers and sexual assault response for law enforcement, medical practitioners, etc.
In addition to these programs, the North Coast Rape Crisis Team can be available to table and/or speak during other trainings hosted by your organization.
